Marc Smerling

Producer, The Jinx

Marc Smerling is an Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker, and principal in Hit the Ground Running Films with his creative partner Andrew Jarecki. The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst marks Jarecki and Smerling’s second collaboration with HBO, following the landmark documentary Capturing the Friedmans, which was presented theatrically and televised by HBO. Smerling produced Capturing the Friedmans, (2003) which won 18 major international prizes including the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival, and the New York Film Critics Circle award. He co-wrote and produced the narrative feature All Good Things (2010) starring Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, and Frank Langella, and produced the acclaimed documentary Catfish (2010) released by Universal Pictures. He is executive producer of Catfish, the TV series. Smerling began his career in documentaries as the associate producer of Gangs, Cops and Drugs for NBC with Tom Brokaw, and The New Hollywood, also for NBC. He also served as senior U.S. producer for Berlusconi Television. Through his company Notorious Pictures, Marc produced and directed more than a hundred television commercials and music videos, as well as documentaries and animated series for broadcast. He is a 1985 graduate of Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Journalism and holds a Masters degree from the USC School of Cinema-Television
